Windstorm Niklas will cost insurers between €1bn and €1.9bn, according to a preliminary estimate from AIR Worldwide. The modelling firm said the majority of losses will occur in Germany, with losses also recorded in Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, France, Ireland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Poland, Switzerland, and the UK. The AIR loss estimate includes physical damage to property and contents, but not business interruption. AIR’s estimate follows that of German actuarial firm Meyerthole Siems Kohlruss in Cologne, which estimated an insured loss of €700m in Germany as a result of Niklas and the less damaging windstorm Mike. AIR said the average claim size related to the storm was expected to be low, but the sum of claims may rise to a significant level due to the large spatial extent of damaging winds.
